We have
worked with many local authorities in conjunction with planning
consultants in private practice. Our usual
approach is to negotiate and work with the officers rather than
challenging them. In most
cases the planning process is sufficiently lengthy and uncertain
without opposing the will of the planning authority. Local
authorities in the north west are generally keen to encourage
economic activity and do not yet suffer from the NIMBY difficulties
of heavily developed areas of the south east. "The
challenge for the modern architect is the same as the challenge
for all of us in our lives: to make out of the ordinary something
out-of-the-ordinary."
